Kevin Smith is Donating His Weinstein-Tainted Royalties to the Non-Profit Women In Film

Kevin Smith was one of the principal producers to stand in opposition to fallen non mainstream tycoon Harvey Weinstein, at a moment that doing as such was still sort of a major ordeal.

It was particularly noteworthy for somebody like Smith, who got his huge break by means of Weinstein, and spent the greater part of his vocation making motion pictures for Miramax (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl) and The Weinstein Company (Clerks II, Zack and Miri Make a Porno).

Smith tweeted that he "felt embarrassed" that "while I was benefitting, others were in horrible agony." And now he expects to pay some of that benefit forward.

"My whole profession is tied up with the man," Smith tells a live group of onlookers on another scene of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast. "I'm not a casualty in this.

This isn't about me by any means. We know who the casualties are. Be that as it may, my crap is tied up with this man… I had a fantasy and I made it, and I displayed it to some person, and they didn't influence me to accomplish something fucking terrible.

So I feel like there are such a significant number of individuals that we are aware of now, and perhaps more, that were made to do shocking things to influence their fantasies to work out as expected and possibly didn't get the chance to touch the fantasies; this fucking fella pursued them away."

So what would smith be able to do now? "I work in an industry where fortunately there are profits that leave a motion picture for whatever remains of your life," he clarifies, "so there's such an incredible concept as residuals, where despite everything I get cash for those motion pictures, for the motion pictures I made at Miramax and for the films I made with at Weinstein.

The main thing I have a feeling that I can do is, I don't need that any longer." So Smith will rather give every single future sovereignty and residuals from those movies to Women In Film, a not-revenue driven association that, per their site, "advocates for and propels the vocations of ladies working in the screen enterprises – to accomplish equality and change culture."

"That feels like a begin," Smith says. "Ideally that goes to individuals that get the chance to make poop without dealing with some fucking creature saying, 'Here's the cost.'"
